Solar electricity is one of the most popular renewable energy technologies for homes and businesses, with tens of thousands of "distributed" installations across all fifty states. Considerations such as how much sun you get, current electricity prices, state policies, and new business models can seem overwhelming. There are even new options that mean that you might not even own the solar system on your building. While SEPA is a business-to-business organization, we have recognized consumers' information needs and have filtered through the noise to provide you with resources for understanding and developing your own solar projects.

There are a number of online solar calculators, which can provide you with estimates of performance, cost, and available incentives. Utilize one or more as a first assessment of a solar system. Usually, an onsite assessment should still be performed by a qualified installer.

These directories of solar installers are provided by miscellaneous third-party organizations, which have various screening and endorsement processes. As with any capital purchase, you should assess multiple vendors for performance and cost estimates, as well as their capabilities, references and qualifications. SEPA endorses certification from the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.
